Deep Fried Musubi
The curiosity started a year ago when my sister Charmaine reported that deep fried musubi’s were starting to get pretty popular over in the mother land. She informed me with a tone of voice that indirectly expressed “Haha, I’m eating yummy deep fried musubi and your sorry butt lives on the mainland where deep fried musubi don’t event exist yet.” I hate it when I’m the informed and not the in4mant. I like to be first!
Then just one week ago our fellow Musubi crew member Kaipz (short for Kaipo) went back home to Maui for spring break. Of course he just had to cruise to one of the local spots for a deep fried musubi, took photos of it and texted it to me (see photo above). I think he sent the text to make me jealous as if to say, “Too bad you’re stuck in 65degree SoCal while I’m in perfect weather Maui cruising the beach and eating onlocious deep fried musubi.”
I’ve had enough of this! I can’t take it anymore! So while cruising out to dinner with Chef and FIRST PLACE TRADITIONAL POKE WINNER Aaron Lee of Hapa J’s, I asked him if he could hook a braddah up and make me some one off deep fried musubi. Sure enough, the next day I get a text from Aaron that said “You wanted it, so I made it………Tempura Spam Musubi.” (text came with the photo above) So I jumped in my ride and drove 20 minutes south to have my first experience of deep fried musubi. When I got there, all the Hapa J’s crew were amping on it and had the “best thing ever” smiles on their faces. Chef brought me out two fresh and hot musubi, the Lakers were playing on the TV and life at the moment was pretty stinkin perfect : )
The deep fried musubi were amazingly tasty, as expected. A true MOUTH BREAKING experience! Not sure if Hapa J’s will add it to the menu, but I am bugging them to. If you like try, call up Hapa J’s to request it, ask one of your local spots to start fryin it up or just make’um at home. Whatever the case, make sure you share your experience with us and send us photos! (We already have some new ideas and ingredients to integrate) So as of right now, I’m claiming that this is the FIRST SoCal encounter of a deep fried musubi made public!
